Our president class is our upper grade class! Reading: Read Aloud: Leaders are reading "Ain't I a Woman" by Sojourner Truth. In the past they have read chapters 35-37 in Alex Haley's "Roots". Next they will read "What is the Fourth of July to a Slave" by Fredrick Douglas.  Independent Reading: Students are reading either "Lord of the Flies" or "Chronicles of Narnia". They have read "Black Like Me" and "Our America" in the past. Homework: Students are reading "A Terrible Night" by Anton Chekhov. Â
Writing:  Leaders are writing a biography of a historical African American. They will then write a biographical poem on the same individual, which will be used in our school's black history book.
Math  Measurment: Leaders can find the perimeter and area of irregular polygons, quadrilaterals and triangles, measure circumference and are learning about volume.  Algebra: Leaders can show an inequality on a number line, write equations from word problems, solve equations, and can graph equations by creating a XY table and finding coordinates. Geomentry: Leaders know polygons from six types of triangles to a decagon, polyhedrons, types of prisms and pyramids, can measure angles with a protractor and estimate measurements without one, can find the missing angle of a triangle and quadrilateral, and can determine the net figure to a prism or pyramid. Graphing: Leaders can make a line graph and a bar graph as well as use data on graphs to solve problems. Fractions: Leaders can make equivalent fractions, add fractions, subtract fractions, multiply fractions, divide fractions, simplify fractions, change improper fractions to a mixed number and vice versa. Social Studies: Leaders are building their business, "Kidz Creationz", and are learning about current politics by reading the newspaper. Students will also begin to play the Stock Market Game soon.
