Knowledge is learned through daily hands-on projects and research which follow state standards as well as the interests of our students. All students recycle in class and learn about being “green”. We also have several class pets and a variety of plants which we also use for research. Finally, every student is required to do a monthly project based upon the topic of their choice which they must present to the class on presentation Friday. All projects will also be added the school website's project section.
Time Distribution 45 min: group instruction - students learn about various topics that are based upon the Illinois Learning Standards Schedule. All instruction is project based meaning that the teacher guides students in conducting experiments, creating models and various projects to enhance their learning. 45 min: individual projects - students are able to research the topic of their choice and create a project based upon it. Prekindergarten and kindergarten students work in groups on projects about plants, animals, weather and other topics of interest to them. Science Projects Students learn scientific skills and apply them through their own personal projects and class projects. These projects are based upon each student's individual interests such as: Biology including animals, cellular biology, environment, evolution, genetics, human biology, pathogens and disease, plants and other topics. Physics including electricity and magnetism, energy and momentum, force and motion, sound and light, circuit design and robotics and other topics. General science including space, weather, horticulture, waste management and other topics. Chemistry including atoms, elements, matter, biochemistry, chemical reactions and other topics.
Other projects may include:
- Entering a robotics challenge against other schools.
- Spending class on the lakefront to learn about natural science in our community.
- Interviewing scientists to learn more about science
