Math Focus

For students to develop a deep love for and understanding of mathematical concepts and how they can be applied to solve realistic problems. Students use manipulatives and create realistic word problems to be solved using math skills. Knowledge is also applied to solving problems that adults face such as balancing a bank account and bills, paying interest on loans and credit cards, using geometry to build things, and using algebra to solve everyday problems.  Math assignments are NOT  based upon working out of workbooks or completing meaningless worksheets!

Time Distribution

10 Minutes: Problem of the day-  Leaders work to solve various word problems

10 Minutes: Math learning centers – PACE – This will include individual practice in the core mathematics areas.

10 Minutes:  Review of various concepts learned

45 Minutes: Group and individual instruction – this includes measurement on Mondays, time on Tuesdays, algebra and geometry on Wednesdays, graphs and graphing on Thursdays and fractions, decimals and percents on Fridays.  Leaders will work on various projects  and will use manipulatives to enhance knowledge of topics.

All students will do an extended response problem on Fridays.

Math Projects

  • For each concept, students must demonstrate their knowledge by presenting to the class their findings.

  • Math Fair project: students must create and present a math project showing how to use a mathematical concept to solve a problem.

  • Personal banking: students must  maintain their own savings account.

  • Businesses development: Students learn how to create their own business and study how to use math to make it grow.

  • Stock Market Game: Students in the Senate and President class learn how to invest in the stock market by playing the Stock Market Game.

  • Math final project: students will create a tutorial video demonstrating how to solve various problems in a fun and informative video.

  • Math Builders' challenge:  this challenge is based upon using mathematical concepts to build a structure.
