Focus Social studies includes history, politics, and economics. Students learn through watching movies, personal interviews documentaries, and newscasts as well as by reading magazines, journal articles, encyclopedia articles, and the Internet. Our field-studies program enables them to see learned topics in action as well as learn from professionals in the field. Our goals include for students to: Understand and be able to discuss local and national politics. This includes learning the constitution and the structure of our governmental structures. Students will visit the state capital, attend a city council meeting, read the newspaper, watch CNN and other news shows. Understand the economy and how he/she participates in it. This includes studying entrepreneurship, learning about the stock market, and understanding credit. Students will visit local businesses and discuss topics from class with business leaders. Upper-grade students will read articles from Black Enterprise magazine as well as other business magazines and books. Encourage the development of products that challenge existing ideas and produce “new” ideas. Students will go through the process of researching the market, writing a business plan, and trying to make a profit from their businesses. Each student creates a feasible business idea and then writes a business plan for it. In October, all students will present their businesses to the class and will vote on three with the greatest profit potential. Then, all winning businesses will be presented at our business fair and will be judged by actual business owners, parents, and students. The winning business for each class will be the business that will be worked on for that class for the remainder of the year. Critique and compare and contrast periods in history to today from a political and economic viewpoint.
